Today was Jackson’s last day of Kindergarten. When I got home, he showed me his yearbook from school and was showing me the pictures of all his friends from his class. When he got to a particular little girl, he got visibly bashful. I asked him if this girl was his favorite friend. He said, yes. Then he asked me if I wanted to know what another boy in class had told him. Being the always interested Dad, I said, yes.
He went on to tell me that his school friend had told him that he should “make out” with this little girl. I was temporarily horrified and terrified about what was to come next…visions of wildly premature behaviour and knowledge for a 6 year old.
I pressed on and asked him what “making out” meant. He said, hugging and kissing and stuff. I asked him what stuff meant. Thankfully, he said he had no idea but was sure it just meant hugging and kissing. He added that “making out” had to be a boy and a girl.
I asked him what about if it was 2 boys. He said, no, that wasn’t allowed.
I asked him what about if it was 2 girls. He said that would be OK.
I don’t have an objection to either approach, but am reasonably sure that my heterosexual male friends will agree, that would be OK.
